Slechts een klein deel van de borstkankerpatiënten is man. Mannen met borstkanker bevinden zich dus in een ‘vrouwelijke’ wereld, wat vaak gepaard gaat met schaamte. In de praktijk lopen zij soms aan tegen onwetendheid van zorgverleners. Verpleegkundig specialist Rani Vanhoudt (UZLeuven) vertelde op het VVRO-congres in maart 2026 over de begeleiding van mannen met borstkanker. Hierbij kaartte zij taboes aan, besprak zij ervaringen van mannen, en gaf zij concrete tips voor zorgverleners.
