Patiënten met hoofd-halstumoren hebben een hoog risico op ondervoeding, sarcopenie en cachexie door tumorgerelateerde klachten en toxiciteit van chirurgie, radiotherapie en chemoradiotherapie. Vroege screening en een multidisciplinaire voedingsaanpak zijn daarom essentieel. Orale voeding heeft de voorkeur, aangevuld met dieetadvies en medische drinkvoeding. Wanneer de orale intake onvoldoende of onveilig wordt, is enterale voeding via een neus-maagsonde of PEG aangewezen. De keuze tussen profylactische en reactieve plaatsing van een PEG vraagt een individuele afweging van nutritioneel risico, behandelintensiteit, slikfunctie en het risico op langdurige sonde-afhankelijkheid. Verpleegkundigen spelen een belangrijke rol bij het signaleren van gewichtsverlies, dysfagie, therapieontrouw en PEG-complicaties. Ook preventie en behandeling van orale mucositis zijn belangrijk om voedingsinname en behandelcontinuïteit te behouden. Gecoördineerde samenwerking tussen verpleegkundigen, diëtisten, logopedisten, artsen en nutritieteams kan behandeluitkomsten en kwaliteit van leven verbeteren.
